THE STORY ON THIS HAT

There is no story to this one. Well, nothing exciting anyway. When I was notified my designs were going to be highlighted for the National Crochet Month Blog Hop, I knew I needed to create a new pattern just for the occasion. And because Spring means so many different weather situations around the globe, a quick hat seemed the perfect pattern. Thank you for stopping by. I give you, this fun, quick to stitch, textured hat pattern; Clancy.

About the yarn

Full disclosure, I didn’t buy this yarn thinking “this is going to grow up and be a great hat one day.” Truth is, I have no idea what I bought it for. An affordable, worsted weight, cake of self-striping goodness. Pretty sure no plan was my plan. There are colorways for everyone in this yarn. 29 choices, each having long stretches of 5 different colors (at the time of this writing). I was able to squeeze 2 Clancy Beanies out of 1 cake! Note: the 2nd one is 2 rows shorter than the first, meaning I stopped the hat on Row 16 and started the brim.
This yarn works up on the thicker side of worsted, making an I/9- 5.50 mm hook a perfect match. It’s acrylic, so it will wash well.

The skills you need

This beanie is made up of slip stitches and double crochets. Yep, that’s it. That said, there is a tricky bit (hint: it’s the joining of the row), BUT! I have filmed an entire walk through VIDEO of the making of this hat for ya. There is also a separate video of only how to work the Adjustable Ring if you just need a quick refresher.

Getting started

Okay, yes, it’s a hat. Making a gauge swatch is not high on the priority list. That’s okay. This ONE AND ONLY time! Hats are pretty forgiving. Please check the notes on gauge for this hat below.
While you’re here, grab this helpful worksheet I created for you to use on your next project, when making a gauge swatch will be a big deal. Print these off (or keep in your digital notebook) to make the process easier and more enjoyable, I’ve created this FREE worksheet as an easy way to figure out gauge. It helps with the steps, the math, and the organization.
